What is a logbook service?

A logbook service at an auto repair shop is a list of requirements prescribed by the car’s manufacturer that must be carried out in accordance with the age of the vehicle and the kilometres travelled. The list of requirements can be found in the service handbook provided with the car form the dealer.

Will I void my warranty if the manufacturer does not carry out the logbook service?

In short, No. Any licensed workshop with qualified automotive tradespeople can carry out your logbook service and will stamp your service handbook.

How much should a car service cost?

Am I paying too much? Car service prices can vary depending on your state and the extent of the service. To give you an idea, a minor service can cost between $200 and $300, whereas a major service can range from $300 to $1,500. Generally, it is a good idea not to economise on these services, since a malfunctioning car can put you and others at risk and may void your car’s warranty.

What does a basic car service include?

A minor service means that your local car mechanic replaces the engine oil and engine oil filter and cleans the cabin filter and engine air filter. Your mechanic will also check the fluid levels, suspension and brake components, tyre condition, lights and windscreen wipers.

A major service is usually based on time or kilometres travelled. Major services aren’t as regular and might include a timing belt replacement, brake fluid flush or fluid replacement.

Interim services are usually performed if the vehicle has been driven regularly under harsh conditions, for example, driving off-road, towing, or racing. Your car mechanic will take care of anything that needs immediate attention as well as the engine oil and filter.

Where can I find a car mechanic?

How do I find the best car mechanic near me? Simply use a search engine (e.g. Google or Google Maps) and look for auto repair shops in your area. Supreme Automotive is located at 23 Hampton Street East Brisbane, conveniently located two streets behind the Gabba.

How long do auto repairs take?

How long a car service takes depends on many factors such as the make and model of your vehicle and what kind of service is due. A small service might take between 1 and 2 hours, a logbook service might take between 2 and 4 hours.

Are cars expensive to repair?

Regular servicing is extremely important to ensure your and other road users’ safety. Plus, prevention can save you thousands of dollars if something goes catastrophically wrong. The total cost of your car service will depend on the complexity of the service, how many kilometres you've travelled, and how much the manufacturer or your mechanic wants to charge. There is no such thing as an average price but it’s safe to say that servicing at a private car mechanic will lower your total costs, as opposed to a dealership.

Why is my check engine light on?

The check engine light indicates that your car’s computer has identified a fault in your car which needs to be repaired. The check engine light alarms you for both minor and severe malfunctions. If the light is solid, the issue should be looked at as soon as possible but you can likely drive to your local auto repair shop. If the light is flashing, there’s a serious issue and you need to pull over immediately.
